The OPEC Fund for International Development is reports that it is discussing areas of future cooperation with Turkmenistan.
The talks are led by Abdulhamid Alkhalifa, general director of the Fund, and Rakhimberdi Jepbarov, head of the board of the State Bank for Foreign Economic Affairs of Turkmenistan.
Last year this international fund signed a $45mn loan agreement with Turkmenistan to develop a maritime fleet. Alkhalifa then said in a press release that "this project is an important catalyst to boost Turkmenistan’s capacity as a seafaring nation in the Caspian Sea region".
The ambitious project to build three maritime vessels, including two RO-PAX type and one dry cargo vessel was also supported by the Islamic Development Bank, which allocated $90.15mn. The new vessels will be built at a shipyard in the port of Turkmenbashi, which is an important component of the Europe-Caucasus-Asia transport corridor.
