Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov on May 10 arrived in Tajikistan for a two-day state visit. According to local TV channel Altyn Asyr, a package of bilateral documents is expected to be signed following the talks.
The TV report mentioned that the visit is meant to be a 'milestone in centuries-old Turkmen-Tajik relations based on the age-old, unbreakable traditions of brotherhood and mutual cooperation'.
Prior to the visit, a business forum and a meeting of the Business Council of the two countries were organized, during which promising areas of the partnership were identified, including energy, transport, logistics, communications, and the agro-industrial complex. The two sides also discussed opportunities to establish joint industrial enterprises.
Mutual trade between the two countries saw a considerable increase in 2022, totaling $52.9mn, almost two and a half times more than the previous year.
Experts predict that Ashgabat and Dushanbe will discuss major regional economic projects during their upcoming talks. For instance, there is an agreement to use Tajikistan's territory to construct an additional fourth branch of a transnational gas pipeline to China. In addition, the Trans-Afghan railway to Tajikistan, which has been under discussion since 2013, is also relevant.
