Amnesty International has released a report called 'Automating Apartheid' in which they urge countries to regulate their companies to prevent them from supplying Israel with surveillance technology.
The report says that the Israeli government is using facial recognition technology to impose an apartheid regime in the occupied territories. The organization calls for an end to the sale of arms and defense technology to Israel.
The report sheds light on the advanced system installed at checkpoints in Hebron which scans the faces of Palestinians as they pass through. The system compares their faces with information found in existing Palestinian databases, and if the person is not found in the system, and if they are suspected of illegal activity, they will not be allowed through the checkpoint.
Amnesty International claims that the Red Wolf system is linked to two other surveillance systems, Wolf Pack and Blue Wolf, and the organization also highlights the use of surveillance cameras in East Jerusalem.
The Israel Defense Forces have stated that they are trying to maintain order and security in the region and conduct security and intelligence operations to reduce the damage caused by terrorists, including to the Palestinian population.
