Uzbek filmmakers have been invited to collaborate to make documentaries and feature films about the life and work of the Turkmen classic, Makhtumkuli, the Turkmen Foreign Ministry reports. This was announced during a meeting between Turkmenistan's Ambassador Yazguly Mamedov and the Deputy Director of the Film Agency of Uzbekistan, Shukhrat Rizaev.
"The two sides exchanged views on the possibilities for Turkmen-Uzbek cooperation in the field of cinematography".
Historians say there is documentary evidence that Makhtumkuli, whose 300th birthday will be marked in 2024, once studied in Khiva and Bukhara and considered Alisher Navoi, his mentor.
Makhtumkuli's legacy is honored in Uzbekistan. One of Tashkent's central streets is named after him, and his bas-relief was installed there in 2017. There are also monuments in his honor in the Khorezm region of Uzbekistan.
The information said that Mamedov and Rizaev discussed the possibility of holding Uzbekistan Film Days in Turkmenistan in May 2023 and, accordingly, Turkmenistan Film Days in Uzbekistan in September.
Famous filmmakers and artists from Uzbekistan are expected to visit Ashgabat and the border regions where the Uzbek diaspora lives during the cultural event. Turkmenistan's film days could, in turn, be held as part of the 15th Tashkent International Film Festival.
