On the sidelines of a high-level meeting of the UN General Assembly on zero waste in New York on March 30, Turkmenistan's new modern city of Arkadag will be unveiled, the national mission to the UN reports.
Arkadag (Turkmen for "Patron") is the official title of Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, who ruled the country from February 2007 to March 2022. He is now head of the People's Council (Khalk Maslakhaty), the country's highest representative body, and was recently awarded the official title of "National Leader."
"This city makes extensive use of waste-free technology, smart city systems, and modern environmental solutions," it said.
Arkadag, the provincial center of the Ahal region of Turkmenistan, has been awarded the status of a city of state importance for the first time in the country's history. An inauguration ceremony is planned for the near future.
Turkmen Deputy Foreign Minister Myahri Byashimova will lead the delegation to New York. The event was initiated by Turkey to consolidate efforts toward achieving Sustainable Development Goals.
The meeting is being held in support of the Paris Agreement, the Convention on Biological Diversity, the New Urban Agenda, and the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal.
