Turkmenistan's Central Election Commission (CEC) summed up the results of the parliamentary elections held on March 26, Altyn Asyr TV channel has reported.
"The 125-member Majlis has 65 candidates from the Democratic Party, 18 from the Industrialists and Entrepreneurs Party, 24 from the Agrarian Party, and 18 from citizens' groups".
Voting took place at 2,644 polling stations in Turkmenistan and abroad. In the election, 91.12% of the 3.5mn electorate voted.
According to the Constitution, a citizen of Turkmenistan who has reached the age of twenty-five by election day and has permanently resided in Turkmenistan for the previous ten years may be elected to parliament.
The key powers of parliament are to approve the state budget; to appoint elections of the president and deputies, to decide on holding national referenda; to decide on changes in the state border and administrative-territorial division, and to ratify and denounce international treaties.
