Uzbekistan advanced 65 positions in the Speedtest Global Index, rising from 133rd place in 2020 to 68th by January 2025, according to the Ministry of Digital Technologies.

The progress was highlighted during a meeting between Minister of Digital Technologies Sherzod Shermatov and Ookla executives at MWC Barcelona – 2025. Shermatov met with Ookla President and CEO Stephen Bye, Chief Strategy Officer Chip Strange, and Sales Director for North and Central Asia Victor Zeng to discuss expanding internet infrastructure and enhancing quality monitoring mechanisms.
Both sides explored strategies to accelerate 5G deployment, test innovative solutions for mobile operators, and support their advancement through global expertise.
At the end of the meeting, both parties reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation and advancing joint initiatives.

Founded in 2006, Ookla is a global leader in internet speed measurement and analysis. Its Speedtest Global Index, updated monthly, benchmarks mobile and fixed broadband speeds worldwide.
In January 2025, the average mobile internet download speed in the country was recorded at 51.02 Mbps, while the upload speed stood at 16.1 Mbps.
On the other hand, in January 2024, Uzbekistan ranked 91st out of 144 countries in global mobile internet speed, moving up four spots from December 2023.
In April, Uzbekistan emerged as Central Asia’s leader in mobile internet affordability, according to Digital Technologies Minister Sherzod Shermatov on LinkedIn. The country ranked 43rd globally out of 179 nations in a study evaluating communication costs as a percentage of average income. With an average monthly salary of $364.21, Uzbekistan’s residents spend just $4.36 (1.20% of their income) for 10 GB of mobile internet.
