Uzbekistan abstained from voting as the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution marking the third anniversary of the Russia-Ukraine war. The document, drafted by Ukraine and European nations, called for the "immediate, complete, and unconditional" withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian territory.

A total of 93 countries supported the resolution, while 18 nations, including Russia, Belarus, the U.S., Hungary, Israel, and North Korea, voted against it. Uzbekistan was among 65 countries, including Kazakhstan, India, and China, that chose to abstain.
U.S. Pushes Alternative Resolution
The United States proposed a separate resolution that avoided direct criticism of Russia, referring to the war as a "conflict" and omitting references to Russian-occupied Ukrainian territories and international law violations. This version, which called for an "immediate end" to the war without condemning Moscow, failed to gain enough support.
Following European-led amendments emphasizing Ukraine’s territorial integrity and a "just peace," 93 countries backed the revised resolution. The U.S. and 72 other nations, including Uzbekistan, abstained. Meanwhile, the UN General Assembly rejected Russia’s proposed amendments to the U.S. resolution.

Russia expressed willingness to support the U.S. resolution if it included language addressing the "root causes" of the war. Russian Permanent Representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, described the U.S. draft as a "good step." However, Moscow’s amendments were not accepted.
Bloomberg reported that the U.S. attempted to block Ukraine’s resolution, urging UN members to support its version instead. The U.S. State Department described its draft as a "historic resolution" aimed at promoting peace, though it notably omitted references to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Despite Washington’s request for Ukraine to withdraw its resolution, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy instructed the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry to maintain its stance, leading to the adoption of the Ukraine-backed resolution.
