Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has called for accelerated efforts to transform the country into a leader in nuclear energy. Speaking on the nation’s energy future, he announced plans to construct two large nuclear power plants, with the possibility of adding a third.

“We need to accelerate the construction of nuclear power plants. We will build two large plants, maybe three. We need to turn Kazakhstan into a country with developed nuclear power, active use of artificial intelligence and full digitalization,” Tokayev said.
In a recent interview with Ana Tili, Tokayev reiterated the need for a high-capacity nuclear power plant and confirmed that construction on the second, and potentially a third, facility could begin soon.
This follows a national referendum on October 6, 2024, in which 71.12% of voters supported the development of nuclear energy.
On January 7 Daryo reported that the Kazakh-Chinese joint venture, Ulba-TVS LLP, has successfully reached its target production capacity of 200 tons of low-enriched uranium fuel assemblies by the end of 2024, enough nuclear fuel to reload six nuclear reactors.
