Afghanistan has exported 10,285 tons of stone to Iran over the past eight months, marking a 100% increase in exports of such materials, according to an Iranian official. The shipments, valued at over $3.1mn, have been facilitated through the Dogharoon border customs since the beginning of the current Iranian solar year on March 22, 2024.
Mehdi Shirdel, governor of Taybad district in Iran’s Razavi Khorasan Province, reported that the stone shipments originated from Afghanistan’s Bamyan Province. The stones were transported via Herat before entering Iran. Each truck carrying the stones has a loading capacity of 24 tons, Shirdel added.
This surge in exports reflects the growing trade relations between Afghanistan and Iran, with the Dogharoon border serving as a key hub for these transactions. The increase in stone exports is seen as a positive development in regional trade, particularly for Afghanistan's mining sector.
In addition to the stone exports, regional trade through Iran’s Sistan and Baluchestan Province has also shown growth. According to a report by the Iranian news agency Mehran, nearly 2mn tons of goods were traded through customs terminals and border markets in the region between March 20 and November 20, 2024.
Ayoub Kord, head of the Road and Transportation Department of Sistan and Baluchestan, stated that a total of 1,998,553 tons of goods were traded through two major border crossings: the Mirjaveh border crossing, which links Iran and Pakistan, and the Milak border terminal, located near Helmand city and connecting Iran with Afghanistan’s Nimruz Province.
These border crossings are crucial in facilitating the movement of goods, including agricultural products and industrial materials, helping to strengthen economic ties between Iran and its neighboring countries.
