Turkmenistan is upgrading its electricity infrastructure, recently completing the high-voltage transmission line "Balkan-Dashoguz", Eldaniz Gusseinov, Foreign Policy Analyst from Central Asia reports. This upgrade aims to create a unified national energy grid, enhancing the reliability of Turkmenistan's power network and enabling increased electricity exports.
Turkmenistan currently exports electricity to neighbouring countries such as Afghanistan, Iran, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan, offering them electricity primarily generated from natural gas.
Turkmenistan's electricity production is set to rise to 37.5 bn kWh by 2028, up from 28.4 bn kWh in 2021. The country is actively expanding its electricity export routes, including plans to extend its supply network to Afghanistan.
Projects like the Kerki-Andkhoy-Shibergan-Mazar-i-Sharif transmission line aim to boost electricity supply to Afghan regions, with future extensions planned to Kabul. Turkmenistan is also developing infrastructure to supply electricity to South Asia via Afghanistan and the Caucasus region through Iran, while also aiming to increase exports to other Central Asian nations like Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan through new power plants and modern substations.
The country aims to increase its electricity exports by 8.7% by 2025, supported by ongoing infrastructure improvements and international partnerships. These strategic efforts and infrastructure investments position Turkmenistan as a key electricity exporter in the region, focusing on expanding its market reach and ensuring a stable power supply for both domestic and international consumers.
In 2022, Turkmenistan exported around 3.2 bn kWh of electricity, with Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan as the primary destinations. The country's electricity exports were valued at $165mn in 2022, with the majority going to Uzbekistan ($105mn) and Kyrgyzstan ($59.5mn).
The growth in electricity exports is driven by infrastructure upgrades and strategic investments. Turkmenistan's significant investments in the energy sector, including new power plants and transmission lines, have increased its export capacity and reliability.
Turkmenistan's strategy includes diversifying its export markets, with plans to expand into new regions such as the Caucasus through Iran and South Asia via Afghanistan.
