The management of QazaqGaz has discussed in Ashgabat (Turkmenistan) the issue of possible supplies of Turkmen gas to Kazakhstan on a mutually beneficial basis, the company's press service reports. The head of QazaqGaz, Sanzhar Zharkeshov, met with Deputy Prime Minister Batyr Amanov and the head of Turkmengaz, Maksat Babayev.
"The parties noted the mutual interest in the implementation of gas pipeline projects on the territory of the two countries and gas supplies on a mutually beneficial basis". Readiness was expressed to "expand strategic cooperation" in this area.
QazaqGaz is holding the talks on behalf of Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev with the aim of developing the gas industry in a comprehensive manner, including stable supply to the domestic market, expanding the resource base and increasing its investment attractiveness.
In Turkmenistan, one of the key players in the Central Asian energy market, natural gas production grew by 6.9% and exports by 12.6% in 2023. The country produced a total of 80.6bn cubic metres of gas in the period under review.
Last year, Turkmenistan exported gas to China, Russia, Azerbaijan (via Iran) and Uzbekistan.
The main routes for transporting Turkmen gas pass through the territory of Uzbekistan. Turkmenistan uses these pipelines to export gas to Russia and China.
Experts told Daryo that a joint Central Asia-Centre-3 gas pipeline runs along the border between Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan in the Caspian region. "This infrastructure needs significant modernisation."
