Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov received Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian in Ashgabat. "The parties discussed regional and international developments," IRNA reports.
Issues of mutual interest, especially economic relations, trade, transit, energy and counter-terrorism were also discussed. The Iranian delegation included Kazemi Qomi, special representative of the president for Afghanistan affairs, Demirchilou, the director general of Eurasia, and Alireza Mahmoudi, the consular director general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Iran and Turkmenistan share a border more than 1,000km long. Both countries border Afghanistan, which is considered one of the most unstable countries in the region.
Experts told Daryo that Turkmenistan and Iran, which are also Caspian Sea neighbours, plan to sign a 20-year interstate cooperation agreement.
The two countries have jointly implemented a number of major projects. The "Dostluk" Dam and the Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran transnational railway have been built jointly, in addition to cross-border gas pipelines and power lines.
