The Secretary General of the Organisation of Turkic States (OTS), Kubanychbek Omuraliev delivered a speech at the opening veremony of the international event dedicated to granting the status of Cultural Capital of the Turkic World in 2024 to Anau city of Turkmenistan.
In his speech, he underlined the noteworthy role of Turkmenistan within the OTS as an observer state, making substantial contributions to fostering cooperation and strengthening relations among Turkic states.
Secretary General also reaffirmed the significance of studying monumental sites of Anau by the academic circles and taking relevant measures to promote their importance and historical value.
Anau is a pilgrimage site. The surrounding area contains archaeological sites dating back to the end of the 5th millennium BC. A popular site is the ruins of a medieval mosque. Its portal depicts dragons, which is unusual for Muslim architecture. Most of the building was destroyed by a devastating earthquake in 1948.
In October, Turkmenistan plans to hold a youth forum, a fair of arts and crafts of Turkic peoples and a theatre festival of TURKSOY countries. An international film festival "Korkut Ata" and a concert of artists from Turkic-speaking countries are planned for November.
According to some data, the total number of speakers of Turkic languages at present is about 120mn people.
The speakers of these languages are concentrated in the CIS countries (Azerbaijanis, Turkmens, Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, Uzbeks, Kumyks, Karachais, Balkars, Chuvash, Tatars, Bashkirs, Nogais, Yakuts, Tuvinians, Khakass, Mountain Altaians, Gagauz) and beyond - in Turkey (Turks) and China (Uighurs).
