Tanzila Narbayeva, the Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan, engaged in discussions with Tulia Ackson, President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), in Geneva. The meeting primarily focused on enhancing ties between Uzbekistan and the IPU, along with logistical considerations for collaborative endeavors, the Senate of the Oliy Majlis reported.
Uzbekistan's integration into the Inter-Parliamentary Union has been swift and impactful. Recent milestones, such as the successful hosting of the International Parliamentary Forum on Sustainable Development Goals in Bukhara and the 14th Summit of Women Leaders of the Parliaments in Tashkent, underscored this integration. Highlighting these achievements, Narbayeva emphasized Uzbekistan's commitment to international parliamentary cooperation.
The upcoming 150th anniversary Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, slated to be held in Uzbekistan next year, stands as a testament to the nation's growing prominence in global politics. Initiated by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, this event marks a historic first for the Central Asian region, solidifying Uzbekistan's status as a significant player on the world stage.
Narbayeva and Ackson deliberated extensively on the organization and execution of the forthcoming Assembly in Tashkent. Acknowledging Uzbekistan's pivotal role, Ackson expressed her dedication to ensuring the event's success, aiming to make it an indelible moment in the annals of parliamentary history.
“We are glad that Uzbekistan is hosting this Assembly because it is your country that deserves such an honor. I am ready to do my best to make the Jubilee Assembly in Tashkent an unforgettable event in the history of PI and the whole world parliamentarism” Tulia Ackson shared.
Moreover, in a forward-looking move, the IPU revealed its intention to formulate a comprehensive document delineating the medium and long-term priorities of the global parliamentary movement. The outcome of the Tashkent event in 2025 is expected to inform this seminal document, reflecting the collective aspirations of member states towards fostering democracy, peace, and cooperation worldwide.
The Inter-Parliamentary Union, founded in 1889, serves as a vital platform for parliamentary discourse, collaboration, and concerted action on matters of international significance. With its overarching goal of advancing democracy and fortifying parliamentary institutions, the IPU continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the global political landscape.
