Tajikistan's foreign trade dynamics for the first nine months of this year have been reported by the Customs Service of the Republic, revealing a total turnover of $5.1bn. Notably, this figure represents a decrease of $508mn, or 9%, compared to the same period in 2022.
Breaking down the trade balance, imports constitute a significant portion, totaling nearly $4.2bn, while exports contribute over $934mn. A closer look at the year-on-year comparison for January-September 2023 indicates a 10% increase in imports, amounting to almost $369mn, and a noteworthy 48% decrease in exports, reflecting a decline of $877mn.
Approximately 82% of Tajikistan's foreign trade is linked to imports, underscoring the country's reliance on external products, while over 18% pertains to exports. Despite the economic challenges, the Customs Service highlighted the resilience of Tajikistan's financial system, reporting that the payment plan for the first nine months was about 5.5bn somoni (around $502mn). However, in practice, the budget received over 6.7bn (over $611mn) somoni during this period, exceeding the initial expectations.
