The delegation of the Republic of Tajikistan, led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the National Commission for UNESCO, Sirojiddin Muhriddin, is actively participating in the ongoing 42nd session of the General Conference of UNESCO in Paris.
Commencing on November 7, and scheduled to conclude on November 22, the conference has gathered heads of state, government officials, and esteemed representatives from across the globe to deliberate on crucial matters pertaining to science, education, and culture.
The inauguration of the event on the first day saw addresses by the President of the 41st session of the UNESCO General Conference and the Chairperson of the Executive Board. Subsequently, elections for the president of the 42nd General Conference were held. During the proceedings, the Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, presented a comprehensive report on the organization's activities from 2018 to 2021. The conference concluded its first day with discussions and adoption of the draft UNESCO program and budget for the years 2024-2025 and 2026-2029.
On November 9, the General Policy Debate was opened by the Director-General, with participation from heads of delegations representing member countries of the organization.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan, Sirojiddin Muhriddin, took the floor on November 10, during the General Policy Debate. In his address, Minister Muhriddin emphasized the significant contributions of Tajikistan to global science, education, and civilization. Highlighting the rich intellectual heritage of Tajik scientists, philosophers, poets, and writers such as Rudaki, Firdawsi, and Sina, he underscored their enduring influence on world civilization.
Muhriddin informed the participants about Tajikistan's active role in UNESCO over the past 30 years. Tajikistan has been a proactive participant, contributing to various projects in science, education, and culture. The Minister also celebrated the inclusion of several sites, including the "National Park of Tajikistan," the ancient city of Sarazm, the state reserve "Tiger Gully," and the transnational cultural heritage of the Silk Roads, known as "Zarafshan-Karakum," in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The Minister articulated Tajikistan's commitment to addressing global issues, particularly in the realm of water and climate, echoing the initiatives of H.E. Emomali Rahmon, the Leader of the Nation, related to glacier preservation.
Expressing deep concern, Minister Muhriddin turned the spotlight on the complex and catastrophic situations in Afghanistan and Palestine. He urged the international community to swiftly provide humanitarian aid to the suffering people in these regions and called for an immediate ceasefire in Palestine, advocating for a negotiated solution to the ongoing conflict.
