In a landmark meeting held at the UN Headquarters in Switzerland, the Friends of Water Group convened to address pressing issues concerning water sustainability and to follow up on the outcomes of the UN Water Conference in March 2023. The conference also delved into discussions surrounding the upcoming Third High-Level International Conference on the International Decade of Action "Water for Sustainable Development, 2018-2028."
Distinguished panelists at the event included Under-Secretary-General of the UN for Economic and Social Affairs, Li Junhua, Permanent Representative of Tajikistan to the UN, Jonibek Hikmat, Permanent Representative of the Netherlands, Yoka Brandt, and Deputy Permanent Representative of the United Arab Emirates, Muhammad Isa Abushahab.
The discussions highlighted the critical importance of international cooperation in tackling water-related challenges. Li Junhua emphasized the need for collective efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal of ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all by 2030.
Jonibek Hikmat, the Permanent Representative of Tajikistan to the UN, expressed his delight at the positive outcomes of the UN Water Conference held earlier in March. He provided comprehensive insights into the forthcoming Third High-Level International Conference on the International Decade of Action "Water for Sustainable Development, 2018-2028," scheduled to take place in Dushanbe in June 2024.
During his address, Hikmat extended invitations to UN Member States and UN agencies, urging their participation in this crucial conference. The event in Dushanbe aims to build upon the progress made in previous discussions and set the stage for further global cooperation in addressing water challenges.
