The Sebzor Hydropower Plant (HPP) Construction Project in Tajikistan has earned recognition and received Gold Certification for fulfilling the requirements of the Hydropower Sustainability Standard.
This achievement makes the Sebzor HPP the first project worldwide to be certified according to the International Hydropower Sustainability Standard, which was introduced in March 2023.
Daler Juma, the Minister of Energy and Water Resources of the Republic of Tajikistan, highlighted the significance of the Sebzor Project's achievement, emphasizing the government's commitment to embedding sustainability in hydropower development.
“Adherence to such high benchmarks in sustainability has been possible due to the continuous support and commitment of our development partners – the European Union and the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany. The certification process has already yielded notable and practical benefits for the project,” he added.
Amrikhon Raimov, General Director of Pamir Energy, expressed gratitude for the recognition and underscored the collaborative efforts of the Pamir Energy team and its financing partners. He also acknowledged the International Hydropower Alliance and the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) for their support in assessing and certifying the project.
The International Hydropower Sustainability Standard is an internationally recognized benchmark for evaluating and certifying hydropower projects against a range of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria. Projects that align with the standard commit to following the San José Declaration on Sustainable Hydropower, emphasizing that "sustainable hydropower" is the only acceptable path forward.
In addition to providing recognition, the Standard facilitates access to finance by aligning with sustainability frameworks from organizations such as the World Bank, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the Climate Bonds Initiative, and Renewable Energy credits.
