The state agency Türkmendemirýollary (Turkmen Railways) has invited the Korean companies to take part in major projects in the railway transport industry in Turkmenistan, specifically by participating and investing in the modernization and electrification of the country's railways.
The Korea Foundation also reports that representatives of the Korea Transport Institute (KOTI) visited the Turkmen capital as part of a regional tour. The institute is preparing a "Transport Co-operation Plan in the Central Asia Region". The Turkmen side also held talks with the Korea Railway Corporation and Korea National Railway.
Experts told Daryo that the agency is preparing a feasibility study on the modernisation of the sector with the participation of the Austrian engineering company BERNARD Gruppe ZT GmbH.
Ashgabat is actively developing the international rail network. In 2014, a main line from Kazakhstan to Iran was opened through the country, with a design capacity of 10mn tonnes of freight per year.
Two years later, the Atamurat (Turkmenistan) - Aqina (Afghanistan) railway was built, which could potentially become part of the major Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Tajikistan (TAT) project, with the prospect of access to China.
