Uzbekistan's Ambassador to Italy, Otabek Akbarov, concluded his diplomatic mission, Dunyo reports. In light of this, Edmondo Cirielli, Italy's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, held a meeting with Ambassador Akbarov. Chirielli commended Akbarov's five years of dedicated service and expressed gratitude for his substantial contributions to advancing bilateral relations, adding depth and stability to the partnership on behalf of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Over the past five years, significant progress has been made in fostering political and institutional dialogue at the ministerial and agency levels. Both countries have established friendship groups within their respective parliaments, and Uzbekistan has opened honorary consulates in Florence and Milan, with plans for additional consulates in various Italian regions.
Moreover, more than 10 intergovernmental and interdepartmental agreements have been signed to bolster cooperation in diverse sectors such as law enforcement, intellectual property, agriculture, and culture.
Economic cooperation has seen a substantial improvement in its quality, with numerous prominent Italian companies, including Eni, Enel, Pietro Fiorentini, Danieli, Imagro Group, Ansaldo Energia, Ferroli, and Arsenale, displaying a growing interest in pursuing industrial and innovation projects in Uzbekistan. The total value of projects implemented and under development with Italian involvement now exceeds €9bn.
Notably, direct relations have flourished between Uzbekistan's regions and various regions in Italy, particularly Lombardy, Tuscany, Veneto, Umbria, Campania, Marche, Abruzzo, and Emilia-Romagna.
Ambassador Otabek Akbarov, who took up the post of Ambassador to Italy in August 2018, has also served as Uzbekistan's Ambassador to Greece and as a Permanent Representative to the Republic's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and the World Food Program (WFP).
In other diplomatic developments, Uzbekistan's Ambassador in Poland is concluding his mission, there are prospects for the opening of the Brazilian Embassy in Tashkent, and Jahangir Aminov has assumed his duties as the new Ambassador of Uzbekistan to Israel.
