Iraq's Ministry of Electricity announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Turkmenistan to supply gas to power plants, Iraqi News Agency (INA) reports.
Iraqi Energy Minister Ziad Ali Fadel received Maksat Babayev, the head of the state-owned Turkmengaz concern.
"The talks resulted in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to supply gas to meet the needs of Iraq's production production stations and the electrical system."
Iraq faced disruptions in the supply of Iranian gas (which accounts for about 40% of imports) this summer and the government decided to find alternatives, including Turkmenistan.
Experts told Daryo that Turkmen gas could come to Iraq via transit through Iran, which periodically declares its readiness to re-export it to new markets - on a reimbursable basis, up to 15bn cubic metres of gas annualy.
