Turkmenistan, Central Asia's largest energy exporter, saw natural gas production rise by 9.4% year-on-year in the first nine months of 2023, while exports increased by 14.3%, local TV channel Altyn Asyr reports.
The data was announced at the latest government meeting, where it was said that the gross domestic product (GDP) of the local economy grew by 6.3% during the period.
The report said that President Serdar Berdimuhamedov had instructed "to take appropriate measures to maintain sustainable GDP growth rates, to take necessary measures to maintain the stability of the financial and economic state of the oil and gas complex".
The head of state also stressed the importance of discovering new hydrocarbon resources, strengthening the material and technical base of the industry and introducing modern technologies.
Turkmenistan exports gas mainly to China, but also to Russia, Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan. Electricity is imported by Afghanistan, Iran, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. In addition, the country is an exporter of petroleum products, polymers and synthetic petrol.
Over the period, oil production increased by 0.4%, refining by 1.3%, electricity by 4.7% and exports by 2.2%.
