A devastating 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck an hour ago Saturday morning near Herat, Afghanistan, on the border with Turkmenistan, Earthquakelist.org reports.
The information said that earthquakes like this one can cause significant economic damage and carry a significant risk of loss of life. The origin of this earthquake was at a very shallow depth of 10 km.
Daryo reports from the capital of Turkmenistan that the tremors were strongly felt in Ashgabat and for this reason many organisations let their employees go home.
The U.S. Geological Survey expects economic damage and impacts with a 42% probability of $1 to 10mn, and there is a 97% probability that the economic impact of this earthquake will be $100mn or less. Approximately 4.7mn people were affected by the shaking.
Afghanistan, Iran and Turkmenistan are located less than 300 km from the epicentre of the earthquake. The nearest significant population centre near the earthquake site is Herat, Afghanistan.
