President of the European Council Charles Michel met with President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov in New York on the sidelines of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly.
"Discussed the need to intensify our dialogue across all areas and to open the way to deepen our bilateral relations in the run up to next year’s Central Asia summit," Michel tweeted.
Turkmenistan's state agency reports that Berdimuhamedov said his country attaches great importance to strengthening constructive dialogue with the EU. Leading European companies are present in many sectors of the Turkmen economy - oil and gas, transport, electricity, construction, communications and telecommunications.
Experts told Daryo that the EU and Turkmenistan signed a Memorandum of cooperation on energy in 2008. Europe hopes to receive Turkmen gas via the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan and Turkey. Berdimuhamedov is due to visit EU headquarters in Brussels later this year.
A delegation from the European Parliament recently visited Ashgabat. The question of ratification of the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement signed with Turkmenistan in 1998 was discussed.
Bilateral relations are currently governed by an Interim Trade Agreement. Turkmenistan's two-way trade with European Union countries from January to May amounted to €494.66mn, up 17.8% on the previous year.
