Turkmenistan's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) affects the country's long-term interests in the implementation of large-scale socio-economic programmes, says Turkmen Deputy Prime Minister Batyr Atdayev.
His article was published on the website Turkmenistan: Altyn Asyr. "Accession to the WTO will create great opportunities for increasing competitiveness in world markets, which will contribute to the diversification and development of the domestic trade system".
Turkmenistan was granted WTO observer status in July 2020 and became an "acceding country" in February 2022. It aims to join the organisation by 2030.
A memorandum on Turkmenistan's foreign trade regime is currently being drafted, the submission of which is one of the conditions for WTO accession.
Experts told Daryo that Turkmenistan need to liberalise trade by removing barriers such as import tariffs, quotas, export subsidies, dumping practices and other rules that restrict the free flow of trade.
Turkmenistan is the last former Soviet republic to start WTO accession negotiations.
