A joint meeting of representatives of the countries involved in the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan (TAP) power transmission project is being discussed. Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat reports that Murad Artykov, Turkmenistan's energy industry representative for trans-Afghan projects, said this at the talks.
Official said that "progress has been made in discussions with Pakistan regarding the project, and it was agreed that once Afghanistan gives its approval, a joint meeting will be organized between all three countries".
According to the information, the talks also touched upon issues related to Afghanistan's purchase of Turkmen electricity in 2024 and the implementation of the joint project of the Noor Jihad substation in Afghanistan's Herat province, which is expected to be completed by January 2024.
Once completed, the transmission capacity of electricity from Turkmenistan is expected to increase from 70 megawatts to 110 megawatts, which will help meet energy needs during the winter season.
Experts told Daryo that Turkey's Çalık Energy started laying transmission lines from Turkmenistan's Mary in 2020. The work was suspended due to the change of government in Kabul.
In previous years, Ashgabat has built the Turkmen-Afghan transmission lines Imamnazar-Andkhoy, Serhetabat-Herat and Rabatkashan-Kalainau, as well as towards the city of Mazar-e-Sharif, at its own expense. All of these projects are part of the TAP concept, which, according to various estimates, could generate $110mn a year for the Afghan treasury for transit.
