Representatives of the border guard services of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan and Turkmenistan have discussed about the border cooperation issues. The Afghan Defence Ministry reports the talks included mention of "necessary coordination at the (land) port of Aqina".
The Afghan side was represented at the bilateral meetings by Mawlawi Mansour "Jawed" the commander of the 6th Border Brigade of the 209 Al-Fatah Army Corps. "The two sides underscored maintaining friendly relations and further cooperation in the future."
The Imamnazar-Aqina (Turkmenistan-Afghanistan) checkpoint was opened in 2007. Experts told Daryo that Aqina is one of the key points on the projected Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Tajikistan (TAT) railway.
Turkmenistan shares a border with Afghanistan that is more than 800km long. Ethnic Turkmen live in the northern border provinces. Their total number in Afghanistan is about 1,0mn.
