An Altyn Asyr lake is being created in the Kara-Kum desert - within Turkmenistan's natural Garashor depression - to improve reclamation of irrigated areas and prevent soil salinisation.
The Ministry of Environment of Turkmenistan told Daryo that all this will have a positive impact on the ecology of the region. The fact is that collector-drainage runoff from the country's Mary, Akhal and Balkan provinces used to accumulate in the lowlands of the Karakum sands, flooding pastures.
According to plans, the total capacity of the new reservoir, where water is supplied by a drainage collector, will be 132bn cubic metres, and the water mirror area will be about two thousand square km.
The first phase of the hydro-technical project, the cost of which is estimated at several billion dollars, was put into operation in 2009.
At this stage, work is being carried out within the framework of the Concept for the development of the region around the lake, which provides for the introduction of technologies for desalination of incoming water. This will make it possible to develop fishing here and camel breeding in the adjacent territory.
