The National Agency Türkmendenizderýaýollary (Turkmen Sea and River Routes) reports that it is ready to implement investment projects to develop the maritime merchant fleet in the Caspian Sea.
The press release says that this will improve competitiveness, including by increasing export-import cargo turnover and taking into account the growing demand for services provided by sea transport.
One of the largest projects is the construction of Ro-Pax ferries. The information says that currently four ferries of this type run between the ports of Baku (Azerbaijan) and Turkmenbashi. It is planned to open new routes to the ports of Makhachkala (Russia), Kuryk (Kazakhstan), Astrakhan (Russia).
In addition, construction of an oil tanker is envisaged. Currently, the volume of oil and oil products transported by national vessels accounts for about 30% of the country's export cargoes. There is a high demand for tankers to transport them from the local ports of Ekerem, Aladja and Turkmenbashi.
In addition, the local Balkan shipyard on the Caspian Sea is preparing to fulfil orders for the construction of oil tankers, a supply vessel, multipurpose dry cargo ships and a dredging vessel.
Experts told Daryo that more than ten ships are planned to be built here by 2025. The shipbuilding facility at Turkmenbashi International Port covers a total area of 166,000 square metres and was built by Turkey's Gap Inşaat.
