Turkmenistan supplied $5.85bn worth of natural gas to China in January-July 2023, up 10% from a year earlier, according to the General Administration of Customs of the People's Republic of China. This is followed by Russia, Myanmar, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
China receives Turkmen gas from three fields - Bagtyyarlyk (CNPC manages it under a production sharing agreement), Malay and Galkynysh (controlled by Turkmengaz).
Deliveries have been made since December 2009, following the commissioning of a Chinese-built gas pipeline through Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.
Negotiations are currently underway to build a fourth branch of the pipeline through Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. The new project could increase annual gas supplies from Turkmenistan to 65bn cubic metres per year from the current 40bn.
