Turkmenistan from January to July 2023 increased energy exports: natural gas by 12.1% and electricity by 7.7% compared to a year earlier, according to the State Statistics Committee of the country. In the reporting period, the growth rate of gross domestic product increased by 6.2%.
Turkmenistan, the largest natural gas producer in Central Asia, exported 40.8bn cubic metres of gas last year, up from 42.5bn a year earlier and 33.6bn in 2020.
These data were published in the review World Energy - 2023, prepared with the support of British Petroleum.
Turkmenistan supplied pipeline gas to China (a key buyer, via Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan), Azerbaijan (via Iran), Russia and Uzbekistan. The main production of raw materials was provided by the State Concern Turkmengaz. CNPC (China) operates in the local gas market under the Production Sharing Agreement.
Turkmenistan also sells electricity generated by natural gas to Afghanistan, Iran, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. According to the plan, Turkmenistan's total electricity production will reach 37.5bn kilowatt hours in 2028, up from 28.4bn in 2021.
As experts told Daryo, Ashgabat is exploring the possibilities of supplying its energy resources to the markets of the Caucasus (via Iran) and South Asia (via Afghanistan). Recently, the issue of Turkmen gas supplies to Europe via the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan and Turkey has become relevant.
