An information centre for tourists has opened at the Uzbek-Turkmen border checkpoint "Shavat-Dashoguz", the Uzbekistan Tourist Transport Association reports.
The two countries agreed last year to build a common trade zone in the area.
The opened tourist centre provides the following services: information about the procedure for foreign citizens to stay in Uzbekistan; information about cultural sites; transport rental; currency exchange and sale of SIM cards for Internet connection.
It also provides for booking (air and railway tickets, hotel rooms, tickets for public transport, cultural heritage sites, museums and galleries).
In the first half of 2023, 29.5 thousand citizens of Turkmenistan visited Uzbekistan. It should be borne in mind that to cross the border they need to apply for visas, as the authorities of this country decided to withdraw from the CIS agreement on visa-free regime back in 1999.
The common border with Uzbekistan is the longest for Turkmenistan - about 1700km, and about 300,000 ethnic Uzbeks live in Turkmenistan and about 200,000 Turkmens in Uzbekistan.
