In the reporting period, Turkmenistan supplied pipeline gas to China (a key buyer, via Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan), Azerbaijan (via Iran), Russia and Uzbekistan. The main production of raw materials was provided by the State Concern Turkmengaz. CNPC (China) operates in the local gas market under the Production Sharing Agreement.

Domestic gas consumption last year was 37,5bn cubic metres, up from 36,8bn a year earlier and 34,3bn in 2020.
British Petroleum earlier reported that proven gas resources in Turkmenistan are estimated at 13,6tn cubic metres - fourth in the world ranking. Russia (37,6tn), Iran (32,1tn) and Qatar (24,7tn) are ahead.
