The pollution of Kyrgyzstan's Issyk-Kul Lake is a growing concern, with tons of garbage being lifted from the bottom every year. Divers brought up over 10.5 tons in just four months of 2023, but no one knows how much more waste is still hidden in the lake.
While participating in a lake cleaning event, President Sadyr Japarov was surprised by what he saw. Divers collected more than 500 meters of old and new fishing nets within three hours, which he found shocking.
With this in mind, Sadyr Japarov urged his compatriots to keep the lake clean, highlighting that everyone is responsible for observing order and demanding it from others.
The Ministry of Natural Resources monitors the water quality and soil cover, but the impact of anthropogenic load on the lake cannot be ignored.
Irreparable damage to the lake is caused by water transport, and sewage from boarding houses without treatment plants is also a major concern.
Waste management is another issue, with most garbage being taken to unauthorized landfills. A state program has been adopted to protect the lake and its adjacent territory, but it remains to be seen whether it will be effective.
Issyk-Kul Lake has a unique ability to self-clean, but continued pollution could lead to organic decay and turn the lake into a swamp.
