Kyrgyzstan's president Sadyr Japarov has authorized the placement of a 30 MW mining farm at the Kambar-Atinskaya HPP-2, reports Kloop citing the president's interview with the Kabar news agency.
President Sadyr Japarov confirmed the operation of a mining farm in Kemine, Chui Region, which received state approval. The electricity is sold to this company at the highest tariff of $0,058 per kilowatt.
During the summer, Kyrgyzstan generates sufficient electricity, even with excess that cannot be sold to others. Hence, the president allows such activities where power allows, enabling revenues in the energy sector. If shortages are felt during the winter, these farms' operations will be suspended. For the remaining nine months, they can operate, explained President Japarov.
Furthermore, the Kyrgyzstan president permitted a mining farm at the Kambar-Atinskaya HPP-2. The HPP has a capacity of 120 MW, and the pass-through capacity is 90 MW, resulting in about 30 MW being vaporized. Over 13 years of the hydropower station's operation, Kyrgyzstan lost 6.81 bn kWh of electricity, amounting to $37 mn.
The mining farm up to 30 MW will cost about $20 mn for construction, which will be carried out by an investor associated with the family of former Kyrgyzstan President Kurmanbek Bakiyev, who led the country from 2005 to 2010.
Kyrgyzstan declared a state of emergency in the energy sector, effective from August 1, 2023, to December 31, 2026, due to a worsening energy deficit caused by decreased electricity generation from the HPPs due to the low water level in the Naryn river basin.
