Kyrgyzstan has declared an emergency situation in its energy industry until December 31, 2026, due to climate challenges, low water levels in the Naryn River Basin, and insufficient generating capacity to meet the growing energy demand, media reports.
President Sadyr Japarov signed the decree, which grants the Ministry of Energy the authority to identify and allocate suitable land for renewable energy, and mandates the termination of land rights for energy facility construction from September 1.
The Cabinet of Ministers has one week to undertake a land inventory for renewable energy use and establish the Minister of Energy's responsibility for the decree's proper implementation.
From January to May 2023, a total of 6.486bn kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity was generated in Kyrgyzstan, as reported by the State Statistical Committee. This amount represents a 17.3% increase compared to the same period in 2022.
