A dust storm has recently hit the highlands in Tajikistan, an uncommon occurrence as this phenomenon was typically only encountered in the Khatlon region in the south of the republic. Some residents are experiencing health problems as a result.
Reportedly, a dust storm is not always a hurricane, and the wind in a dust storm may only reach speeds of around 10 meters per second. However, the air currents carry dust and sand, which can quickly blanket a city in a dense veil that irritates the eyes and airways. This poses a particular challenge for those with chronic heart and vascular diseases, who are especially affected during a dust storm.
The situation has worsened this year, with a significant increase in patients seeking medical care at the Metropolitan Medical Center.
The cardiologist at the health complex, Shoir Saifov, has noted that the department is currently experiencing a shortage of places, whereas last year it was almost half empty.
Dust storms have been increasingly affecting Tajikistan, with fewer clear days in May, June, and July. They also now cover the country's north, including the Sughd region, whereas previously, they were limited to the south and center of the republic.
This year's dust storms have started earlier than usual, in early spring. This is due to little rain in Central Asia, Iraq, and Afghanistan. When a relatively colder air mass from the Urals, the Caucasus, or other regions in the northwest moves in, dry incursions cause the ground to become loose and dust to rise. Sometimes, as little as 5-10 meters or 12 meters is enough for this dust to rise from the southern regions and spread to northern Afghanistan.
During a dust storm, taking precautions such as drinking more water and wearing masks is crucial. It is also advisable to reduce physical activity and avoid outside if possible.
According to preliminary forecasts, hot weather and dust storms in Tajikistan are expected to last until October.
