Starting from January 1, 2025, Tajikistan will ban the import and use of bags made of ethylene polymers with a thickness of up to 15 microns.
Reportedly, only bags made of ethylene polymers without handles and used for packaging goods that are part of sold rolls for domestic use, and those made of rapidly decomposing polymeric biological materials will be allowed.
Importers will have to provide the Customs Service with a "Tajikstandart" conclusion when importing packages made of ethylene polymers to determine the thickness of the packages.
Authorities intend to promote the production of eco-friendly packaging materials counting cardboard, paper, fabric, ceramics, and biodegradable polymers.
The government's Environmental Protection Committee will exempt industrial enterprises and shopping centers that produce or use ecological packaging from 15% of the charges for pollution and waste disposal. The ban on polyethylene bags up to 15 microns will not affect the price increase as it will only apply to imported and used bags.
The spokesman of Tajikistan's Environment Committee, Bahodur Sheralizoda, previously addressed the dangers of importing and using polyethylene packages.
Packages under 15 microns quickly decompose under UV rays and emit harmful substances that can negatively impact the environment and health.
Plastic waste in oceans causes massive deaths of marine life and releases greenhouse gases during decomposition.
