Over 2.5mn doses of measles vaccine have been delivered to Tajikistan through the national measles program, media reports.
The spokesman of the country's Health Ministry shared this news revealing that another 400,000 doses of measles vaccine will arrive in Tajikistan by early next week to boost vaccination coverage for over 2.5mn people aged 6 to 15. Currently, the country is preparing for inspections.
Reportedly, measles cases have decreased in Tajikistan due to targeted vaccination of children under 15. 900,000 people have already been vaccinated.
According to the World Health Organization, measles vaccination has prevented 56mn deaths worldwide between 2000 and 2021.
Despite the availability of a safe and affordable vaccine, there were around 128,000 measles-related deaths worldwide in 2021, primarily among unvaccinated or under-vaccinated children below the age of 5.
In 2021, only 81% of children worldwide received the first dose of the measles vaccine by the age of one through routine health services, the lowest rate since 2008.
