Turkmenistan is set to increase its electricity exports by 8.7% by 2025, the Executive Committee of the CIS Electric Power Council reports.
Construction of new power plants, transmission lines, modern transformer substations and energy distribution facilities will help achieve this goal.
Turkmenistan experienced a rise of 5.8% in electricity production and a 6.3% increase in exports from January to May 2023.
Electricity in Turkmenistan is generated from natural gas. The national energy ministry told Daryo that the country's total electricity production will reach 37.5bn kilowatt-hours in 2028, up from 28.4bn in 2021.
Turkmenistan supplies electricity to neighboring Afghanistan, Iran, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan. Ashgabat is now looking into expanding its market reach in the Caucasus through Iran and South Asia via Afghanistan.
This sector of the economy in Turkmenistan is supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), which has allocated $500mn for constructing ring main power lines across the country. The project is expected to be completed by 2024.
