Turkmenistan's leaders - President Serdar Berdimuhamedov and Chairman of the People's Council Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov congratulated Recep Erdogan on his re-election as President of Türkiye. The message said the re-election took place on a democratic basis at this historic time for the Turkish people.
According to Turkmenistan's foreign ministry, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov held a telephone conversation with Erdogan.
"The re-elected President of the Republic of Türkiye confirmed that effective measures will continue to be taken to comprehensively develop traditionally friendly cooperation with Turkmenistan."
Trade
Türkiye is one of Turkmenistan's biggest trading partners. Some 600 Turkish companies active in trade, construction, energy, transport, communications and textiles are registered in the local market.
Last year, trade turnover between Türkiye and Turkmenistan amounted to $2.06bn, an increase of 21.8% compared to the previous year.
Turkmen gas
The gas issue is expected to be discussed during the first visit of Turkmenistan's president to Türkiye, scheduled for the first half of 2023.
According to experts, a 300-km pipeline across the Caspian Sea would better connect Turkmenistan with the Southern Gas Corridor (SGC), which Azerbaijan already uses to supply gas to Europe.
The project could increase the competitiveness of the SGC and make a significant contribution to the creation of a gas hub in Thrace, Turkey. However, the route is opposed by Russia and Iran, the Caspian neighbours, who cite the vulnerability of the sea's ecosystem.
Turkic world
Turkmenistan is the only Turkic-speaking state in Central Asia and Сaspian region that remains only an observer in the Organisation of Turkic States (OTS), along with Hungary and Northern Cyprus.
Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov recently expressed the hope that his country would join the OTS on a full-fledged basis when the current president of Turkmenistan next visits it.
