Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov has been invited to participate in the celebrations to mark the 78th anniversary of Victory Day in Moscow, local TV channel Altyn Asyr reported. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced his invitation in a telephone conversation with Turkmen counterpart.
"The Russian leader invited his Turkmen counterpart to participate in the celebrations marking the 78th anniversary of the Victory Day to be held in Moscow".
Berdimuhamedov emphasized that Turkmenistan holds sacred the memory of those who defended the country on the battlefield and worked selflessly on the home front during those harsh years, bringing the victory closer.
"Today we pay tribute to those who fought and sacrificed their lives for the victory. We cherish and pay great attention to the veterans living among us, and we will continue to pay particular attention to this issue".
Putin, for his part, expressed confidence that the Declaration on deepening the strategic partnership signed earlier will serve the development of bilateral interstate relations. The document was signed during Berdimuhamedov's first official visit to Russia last June.
Turkmenistan, as a country with a neutral status since 1995, is not part of the regional structures headed by Russia, including the CSTO (Collective Security Treaty Organization) and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU - Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia).
Russia recently offered visa-free regime to Turkmenistan, whose authorities decided in 1999 to withdraw from the CIS agreement on visa-free travel.
