Traditional relations of friendship with Turkmenistan will continue to be strengthened, says a letter from Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev to Turkmen counterpart Serdar Berdimuhamedov. The letter was published in all of Turkmenistan's media outlets on May 8.
"There is no doubt that thanks to our joint efforts, the traditional relations of friendship and strategic partnership between our brotherly countries will continue to strengthen and expand in every possible way."
Mirziyoyev also expressed gratitude for congratulations on the referendum on making amendments and additions to the Constitution of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
"Your objective assessment that the entire population took an active part in this important political event, and that the referendum was held in an atmosphere of nationwide support and in line with all democratic principles, is especially valuable for me".
Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, which share a 1,650km border, have increased their mutual trade to nearly $1bn, five-fold compared to the 2017 figure. In recent years, Uzbekistan has switched to buying energy directly from Turkmenistan.
The two countries also have agreed to establish a joint trade center and to share the region's largest (by volume) river, the Amu Darya. This followed a state visit by Berdimuhamedov to Uzbekistan in July 2022 and talks with Mirziyoyev, who called the water agreement "historic".
At this stage, draft normative and technical documents for the demarcation of the Uzbek-Turkmen state border have been practically agreed upon.
