Russian Railways is ready to organise high-speed trains (with a speed of 140 km/h) between Ashgabat and the new regional centre of the country's central region, the city of Arkadag. The planned journey time is 18 minutes (about 30 km).
Sergey Pavlov, first deputy general director of Russian Railways, made the announcement.
"We offer Turkmenistan several projects for electrification, development of a regional passenger railway express, and are considering options involving the organisation of trains running at up to 140 km/h," he said at an international transport forum in Ashgabat.
Russian Railways signed a memorandum of understanding with Turkmendemiryollary (Turkmen Railways) in 2021. The Russian side offered its technology with the possible localisation of the production of some units and assemblies at Turkmenistan's enterprises.
Besides, the sides discusses two major projects for construction and electrification of Turkmenabat-Ashgabat-Turkmenbashy (1150 km) and Ashgabat-Dashoguz (522 km) railways.
Russian Railways is interested in involving Turkmenistan in the International North-South Transport Corridor (INTC), promoted by Russia, India and Iran since 2000.
