On April 11, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed amendments to the legislation on the protection of the rights and freedoms of women and children.
During the year, a group consisting of representatives of the state, non-state and international organizations, and civil activists, including the Nemolchi.uz project, worked on amendments to the legislation to protect the rights of women and children.
Public figure Aziza Umarova commented on the addition of article 126-1 (Family (domestic) violence) to the Criminal Code.
There are two very important points that are connected with the new law. Firstly, there will be a specific measure of punishment for the intentional infliction of life-threatening bodily harm. This is important because, in the Criminal Code, under Article 126-1, offenders who inflict bodily harm on a spouse will be held accountable, - Umarova believes.
Secondly, the public figure says, these are strict terms and the lack of mitigation of punishment for sexual contact with a person under 16 years of age.
This is especially true when looking at previously published figures on the number of crimes that are committed against children. We see a surge of more than two times in such crimes. Therefore, I strongly support the adoption of this law, and I believe that it is very important on the path to strengthening and respecting women's rights,” - Umarova said.
