China's foreign trade turnover with Central Asian countries has reportedly reached $70bn in 2022, an increase of almost 40% compared to 2021.
During the 30 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the region, the foreign trade turnover has increased almost 100 times.
China has become one of the most important trade and economic partners for the five "stans" in recent years.
The total amount of Chinese investment in the region was estimated at $40bn at the end of 2020. More than half of them were channeled to Kazakhstan.
Investments in Uzbekistan from Beijing have increased sharply since 2018. The total figure reached $9bn by the end of 2021. In 2019, China invested a total of $301mn in Kyrgyzstan.
During 2019-2022, China's largest investments in the country were made in the cement sector. Among them are many factory projects worth more than $150mn in Tashkent and Jizzakh regions.
Almost half of the global foreign direct investment in Kyrgyzstan is also accounted for by China.
Energy cooperation is also an important element of China and Central Asia relations.
Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the five countries of Central Asia, a number of major projects such as the China-Central Asia gas pipeline, the China-Kazakhstan oil pipeline, and the Galkinish (Turkmenistan) gas field have been jointly implemented.
