The General Directorate of Migration Management of Türkiye reports that as of February 2023, more than 1.3mn foreigners with residence permits reside in the country, 115,143 of whom are from Turkmenistan.
Turkmen nationals are third on the list, behind Russians (155,369) and Iraqis (129,539). They are followed by citizens of Syria (99,104), Iran (94,615), Azerbaijan (68,925), and Uzbekistan (59,755).
In addition, 88,905 residents of Turkmenistan have short-term residence permits, 12,159 have student visas, and 5,331 have family visas.
Reportedly, until recently, citizens of Turkmenistan could visit Türkiye (for up to 30 days) without applying for a visa. However, at the request of Turkmenistan's Foreign Ministry, the visa-free regime adopted by Türkiye some 15 years ago was lifted in September 2022.
Ashgabat noted that the measure was "temporary" and would "improve and maintain on a systematic basis the rules of stay of Turkmen citizens in the Republic of Türkiye...".
