Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, speaking at the Summit-level Meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement Contact Group in response to COVID-19 on post-pandemic global recovery in Azerbaijan’s capital Baku on Thursday (March 2), proposed to create an international structure for the study of natural disasters and to host it in Uzbekistan.
‘Analysis shows that in recent years, in addition to the fight against the pandemic, humankind has faced the devastating effects of climate change, natural disasters, and man-made disasters. Their scale is growing and represents a serious threat to security and sustainable development not only of individual states but also of whole regions’, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev said, stressing that only unity and mutual support will help the countries overcome common challenges.
‘In this regard, Uzbekistan is in favor of further strengthening activities based on the Global Platform to achieve the main objectives of the Sendai Framework by 2030. Furthermore, to study in-depth the causes of such emergencies and effectively prevent their consequences, we propose the establishment of a special Monitoring and Research Network of the Non-Aligned Movement. We are ready to place this institute in Uzbekistan’, President added.
Reportedly, the event in Baku is attended by heads of state and governments of about 70 countries, including Bosnia and Herzegovina, Turkmenistan, Iraq, Libya, Cuba, Gabon, and Tanzania.
