China is spending billions on pro-Russian disinformation - The Guardian

China spends billions of dollars on pro-Russian disinformation efforts, The Guardian reports.

According to James Rubin, a coordinator for Global Engagement Center, China is spending billions on the spread of "toxic" disinformation around the world. Russia's theses about "NATO starting war" are repeated by China, US special envoy claims.

Rubin says some countries will not recognize invasion into Ukraine as a result, let alone take a specific position on it. For some African and Asian countries, Ukraine is far from war. "They regard the situation as Ukraine seeking more attention from the West, which creates a distortion", - he claimed.

China has not officially sided with Ukraine or Russia since the beginning of the war. However, in February of 2023, Beijing announced its position on the war in Ukraine with a 12-point peace plan to end the war in Ukraine. The document urged both parties to "not add fuel to the fire" and cease fire. Kazakh authorities supported the proposal, while NATO opposed it to a certain extent.
